The Lean Teen Challenge

Goal

Improve health, fitness, and quality of life for teens through physical activity and smart nutrition practices. Our Nutrition Program lays out a plan for lifelong healthy eating habits.

Why is Proper Nutrition Important?

Nutrition packed foods lead to optimal health. Universally accepted healthy foods include: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish and lean proteins, and lots of water. Teen bodies are growing rapidly, requiring an abundance of healthy nutrients for maximum growth potential.

Understanding Healthy Nutrition

Personal, social, economic, and environmental factors all play a role in healthy eating habits among teens. Understanding the facilitators of smart nutrition is important to ensure the effectiveness of any nutrition program. Lean Teen's programs and actions improve levels of healthy nutrition.

The Lean Teen Challengewill give teens the tools to create and maintain a life-long nutrition program. Our wide variety of nutrition lessons presents numerous ways to motivate and keep teens interested and on track.

Rewards and Benefits

Smart Eating benefits every part of the body, including the mind. It's true, you are what you eat. Food supplies the body with fuel for energy, proteins for healthy muscle and tissue growth, fluids to maintain hydration, fiber for intestinal health, and life supporting vitamins and minerals. A teen's body is fast at work developing. These food components support optimal development.

Smart Eating can help you look better. A lean fit body is maintained by supplying a balanced intake of nutrients. Healthy skin, hair and completion are improved with proper hydration. Combined with a regular exercise program, healthy eating develops strong muscles.

Smart Eating helps people lose weight and lower the risk of some diseases. Eating to maintain a healthy weight decreases a person's risk of developing certain diseases, including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. These diseases, until recently found mostly in unconditioned adults, are becoming more common in teens.

Smart Eating can help a person age well. This may not seem important now, but your body will thank you later. Women are especially prone to a condition called osteoporosis (a weakening of the bones) as they get older. Studies have found that an adequate intake of calcium in conjunction with weight-bearing exercise, like jumping rope, running or brisk walking, can help girls (and guys!) keep their bones strong.

In addition to the benefits listed above, smart eating can also:

  • Improve bone health by supplying ample calcium from foods.

  • Improve acne and other skin conditions.

  • Decrease levels of body fat.

  • Provide high levels of energy.

  • Keep the body hydrated.
